Every evening from Monday through Saturday, after working all day for the old Swede, JP would head straight to a bar. On the nights that he got paid, he brought home a few bucks to complement the booze on his breath. Eunice had given him a wide berth since the babies arrivedâtwins with hair as black as a moonless night in the dead of a Swedish winter.
Eunice still sent money upstate to Pa. If not for Lete, Rita wouldâve been in the sorting room months ago. Instead, Eunice had fed her sister piecework as a seamstress, tasks she could accomplish whenever Lete wasnât tackling her or throwing at her head whatever he could toss. After the twins were born, Rita seldom wielded a needle and only mended those articles Eunice left for her in the rare moments when the babies were settled and Lete was asleep.
Pa wanted Rita to leave the city. He said that he hoped to prevent Euniceâs fate from befalling his younger daughter. Wanted to keep Rita out of the bars and someday marry her off to a churchgoing farm boy. Eunice wondered if Pa planned to make the match or just send Rita to church while he got drunk on Sundays like he did any other day of the week. Paâs pressure on Eunice had been mounting. And each day she felt the threat of JP hovering near the ruddy twins.
A reluctant father to Lete, a danger to the infants, JP stayed out past dinnertime most nights. Eunice welcomed his absences. Even if she could get by without his money, he still wouldnât give her a divorce. She often fantasized about letting the lease go, kicking him out of her life, and heading upstate with Rita and the kids. JP wouldnât follow her, wouldnât demand that the police chase down his lawful wife. He was simply too lazy.
